| 11/16/20 | 11/17/20 | Jason Kruse | jkruse@northwestern.edu | Academic Engagement | I tried to get into Alma a few times, both in Chrome and Firefox and got a message that says: This user is not authorized in Alma. See attachment. I was using it all last week without issue. | Geoff Morse | This link does appear to work: http://bit.ly/NWalma Apparently the new redirect that worked when tested did not work in the new SAML implementation but that has now been fixed. 11/17: URL edited and SSL Cert put in place so that http/https: alma.library.northwestern.edu now works properly. | 11/16/20 3:15 PM | ||||

| 11/11/20 | Michael Perry | michael.perry@northwestern.edu | Assessment & Planning | I know I’d reported an issue with a user that had contacted chat about Primo not working in Firefox. Since then I’ve had conversations with 5 other liaisons that have either had significant problems accessing Primo or had talked with users that had. I’ve encouraged everyone to send it details via the form but it seems like something is wrong and perhaps some investigation needs to take place. | Geoff Morse | 11/11: Have sent Ex Libris a report on this inlcuding a HAR file--Waiting for response from Ex Libris. 11/17: Report from Ex Libris: We have received other reports of performance issues when Firefox is used, and Developers are investigating this issue. I have added your scenario and HAR files to their issue. Ex Libris has now stated that this issue will be resolved with the June 2021 release. | 11/11/20 1:14 PM | |||||

| 09/01/20 | Mech Frazier | mechell.frazier@northwestern.edu | Acquisitions | Good afternoon, PCI records for Alexander Street Press are not displaying in Primo/NUsearch. For instance, collection titles for "Alexander Street Press World Newsreels Online 1929-1966" are turned on via PCI, but none of the links are displaying in Primo. This also happens with "Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000" and "Music Online: African American Music Reference," to name a few. It's worthy to note that some ecollections have activated CZ records to ensure students and faculty are still able to access these materials. Most of the CZ records are poor, however, and we would prefer to use PCI if it worked correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Best, Mech | Geoff Morse | 09/20/19 12:49 PM | ||||||

| Becca Greenstein | rgreenst@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | I just did a search for our New Yorker holdings in Primo. The first result (https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/f/1h5vb9e/01NWU_ALMA51569537910002441) is holdings from the 1800s. The second one (https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/f/1h5vb9e/01NWU_ALMA21428483750002441) is print and microform. The third one (https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/f/1h5vb9e/01NWU_ALMA51565701800002441) is current online access, which is probably what people want when doing a search for a current periodical. Is there a way to give preference to current periodicals holdings when searching? | Geoff Morse | 03/09/20 9:32 AM | |||||||

| michael Perry | michael.perry@northwestern.edu | Assessment & Planning | We had a faculty member who was working in the campus office contact chat to report that Primo was not loading (a screen just showing three circling diamonds that never moved). There were able to work in Chrome. I tested it and it would load but was lagging. Sorry I don't have more info. | Geoff Morse | Ex Libris has requested that we send them HAR files for when this happens. I have sent them on so far and am waiting for their response. New Update (as of February 15th): Ex Libris has said they have examined this issue and are going to implement of fix in May 2021. I will forward more information when we receive it from Ex Libris. Ex Libris has now stated that this issue will be resolved with the June 2021 release. | 11/09/20 3:58 PM | ||||||

| Jason Kruse | jkruse@northwestern.edu | Academic Engagement | Very often, the interface will for lack of a better term, glitch right near the search box. It obscures the search box and makes it really frustrating to work in and doubly frustrating to have it happen during classes. See attachment | Alice Tippit | This happens sometimes when you scroll through facets, and then scroll back to the top of the screen. I've seen it often myself, but today when attempting to invoke the glitch the facets popped back into place without floating over the search box, on both Chrome and Firefox. I'll keep an eye on it and if it appears again will report it to Ex Libris. | 11/11/20 11:45 AM | ||||||

| Jason Kruse | jkruse@northwestern.edu | Academic Engagement | Occasionally, I will click on the link to a record in NUsearch, and it looks like the page will load but then it is a blank screen. Closing it and clicking the link again does not load it, and it requires a refresh of the browser to actually get it to load. It happens sporadically and is hard to duplicate. A similar problem is that I will click on a link to a record and nothing happens. Clicking over and over does not open the record, but after a minute or so it opens up, or a refresh fixes it. I am using Chrome when it happens. | 11/18/20 2:51 PM | ||||||||

| 12/08/20 | Chris Diaz | chris-diaz@northwestern.edu | Research Services | It's very frustrating that Primo Law Library e-books that are only available to Law school affiliates. There's no way to filter these results out. Frankly, the law library shouldn't be purchasing materials only for their school. | Geoff Morse | I am not sure there is too much we can do about this since Law Library relies on our view. I can assess our options.I do agree that his can be frustrating for users (both patrons and librarians!). | 12/08/20 12:02 PM | |||||

| 12/17/20 | 12/17/20 | Paul Burley | p-burley@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | The brackets throughout the records have been removed in Primo, which is generally good. However, they need to be retained in the 260/264 $c for dates--for Japanese and Amharic, there's the traditional year followed by the actual year in brackets, e.g., 1971 [1978 or 1979]. These now display as: 1971 1978 or 1979 https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9981532173702441 | Geoff Morse | Have updated the Primo VE creation date display normalization rules to include the square brackets from the Marc 264$c and the Marc 260$c | 12/17/20 7:30 AM | ||||

I tried this with other books and both in Chrome and Firefox with the same result. | Alice Tippit | Jason's Alma account had expired. This doesn’t show in Primo | Geoff Morse | 1/28/2021: Have added new display fields to sandbox. One field is for Cast (records that have MARC 511 indicator 1 value of "1". The other display field is for Participants/performers for MARC 511 fields with an indicator 1 value of "0". 2/1/2021: Have notified Primo team of change and will implement on 2/2/2021. | 02/01/21 | 02/01/21 | Karen Miller | k-miller3@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | Subfield $v (form) does not display in the detailed search results. It's bad enough that it doesn't display in the Browse headings, but I can search on a subject heading and then change Material Type to choose Maps, for instance. However, it would be really helpful to see the $v Maps in the search results displayed. For example, look at this record: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9964137314202441 which has a Subject heading (650) "Indians of North America--Maps". I can see this in the Source record, but only "Indians of North America" is displayed. I only know it's a map because of the Material Type and because "Map" is in the title. | Geoff Morse | 2/2/2021:Added $v to the display for subject headings, not sure why it was not already there! | 02/01/21 11:05 AM

| 02/10/21 | Paul Burley | p-burley@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | The statement of responsibility (245 $c) does not display in Primo. This could affect search, discovery, and especially context because there are elements in 245 $c that don't require authorized access points, i.e., titles, affiliations, translator, illustrator. Basic example: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9980653897302441 Very good example: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9942796594202441 I noticed this because it the non-roman statement of responsibility (880 245 $c) does properly display. Example: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9981569568702441 | Geoff Morse | Implemented possible solution in Primo sandbox on 2/11. | 02/10/21 | 02/10/21 | Paul Burley | p-burley@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | The Genre/Form field (MARC 655) lacks a label in Primo, it's just grouped with a long list of subjects. The MARC 655 genre/form term(s) is specifically not a subject term. I think there are much more complex examples in music cataloging. Note: I think the MARC 655 should display above subject terms, just below the title/publisher/series info. Example for a novel where we don't want the label to be "subject": https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9980495246602441 | Geoff Morse | Implemented this in Primo sandbox (on 2/15/21) and forwarded to display configuration and search configuration for consideration. The 655 field has now been separated out into its own display field labeled Genre/Form 03/04/20201 (GM) | 02/10/21 2:19 PM | ||||

| 02/10/21 | 03/10/21 | Paul Burley | p-burley@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | The MARC 020 $q (ISBN qualifying information) doesn't display in Primo. This field contains information on the volume number, paperback vs. hardcover, etc. for the respective ISBN number. Example where the ISBN refers to a specific volume number: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9980495246602441 | Geoff Morse | Implemented display of $q on the sandbox and have asked display configuration and search configuration to consider (02/15/2021). Subfield q has been added to the display in production NUsearch. | 02/10/21 2:30 PM | ||||

A local item type of "Article" will resolve this. We also need to look at the Herskovits library records for conference papers. Some exxample records for transportation articles, supplied by Rachel Cole are: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/ua6cum/alma9975030754202441 https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9976636874202441 https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9975014664202441 | Geoff Morse | A local resource type of article was created and then Ex Libris was asked to re-index the article records. | 04/08/21 | 04/09/21 | Josh Honn | josh.honn@northwestern.edu | Research Services | I've had a request from a faculty member to see if we can make the Oxford English Dictionary more easily findable in the library catalog. When you search "Oxford English Dictionary" the database is the second hit, however, when you search OED (which it's commonly known by) the database result is buried. Any chance we can game the algorithm to get this to appear as the first search result for both? Thanks! | Alice Tippit | Set up OED as a recommended database using resource recommender. With "oed" as the search term it appears above other search results. | 04/08/21 9:06 AM

| 04/13/21 | 05/01/21 | Paul Burley | p-burley@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | The 490 is a transcribed field and should not hyperlink--which is why we have "series note". But, the 490 is also hyperlinked in Primo right now, so in the case of the record below "Young readers' series" leads to a similarly named series. https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/h04e76/alma9952123884202441 | Geoff Morse | Stopped using Ex Libris default Series display field and used NUL's own Series title field that does not include the 490 field. CHecked with Kevin to make sure we have all the correct fields in series title display. Verified that 490 field does display as series note but does not hyperlink. | 04/30/21 | 05/04/21 | Stacey Schroeder | s-schroeder2@northwestern.edu | Metadata Services | Prints and drawings are identified as "other" material type in Primo, and I was wondering if these materials could be identified as "image" instead? Posters are currently identified as images, so maybe it's possible to change the resource type for prints and other graphic materials? I don't know which fields Primo pulls from to display resource type, so maybe I would need to change something in the bib records. Here are a few examples: MMS IDs 9980495250102441; 9980482127902441; 9981521363002441; 9980858608902441 Thanks for your help! | Geoff Morse | This issue was resolved by changing the value in the 33rd position of the 008 field from “a” (‘Art original’ ) to “k” (Two-dimensional nonprojectable graphic). | Gina Petersen | gina.petersen@northwestern.edu | Assessment & Planning | I was looking for archival anthropological video footage and came across some confusing search results. A search for "video recording in ethnology" has things such as Pocahantas, F Troop, and The Beverly Hillbillies in the results. I'm guessing the Primo is expanding to include "Indians of North America" in the search, though that doesn't explain Beverly Hillbillies. It was jarring to see these films in the search results. I understand expanding a search, i suppose, but it's also very north american centric. The results don't include films or tv shows from other continents. https://search.library.northwestern.edu/discovery/search?query=any,contains,video%20recording%20in%20ethnology,AND&pfilter=rtype,exact,videos,AND&tab=Everything&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&sortby=rank&vid=01NWU_INST:NULVNEW&mode=advanced&offset=0 | Alice Tippit | If I remove it and just search on "recording in ethnology" F Troop no longer appears on the second page of results. It still appears further on, probably because "Indians of North America" is in the subject headings for that record. The Beverly Hillbillies still do, maybe because Primo is cross referencing to "mountain people"? | 11/01/21 12:58 PM | ||||||

| Becca Greenstein | rgreenst@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | I searched for the title of a known item: DO NOT ERASE: MATHEMATICIANS AND THEIR CHALKBOARDS (NUsearch, all fields). I'd found this in Gobi and it's available through the JSTOR DDA program. This search did not have the book in this results - I narrowed to books as the format, and deleted the colon to see if that was causing the trouble (it wasn't). Then, I found the MMS ID in Alma (9981679182202441). A search for that in NUsearch did bring up the book. Thoughts? | Alice Tippit | All caps search = not found! | Anne Zald | anne.zald@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | During a chat a patron, who indicated they were located in the library, shared a link with me and a permalink from NUSearch. Patron could not access ebook full text from the link shared. I could. I also viewed the permalink shared by patron and saw info about both print and ebook edition. I then searched the title in NUSearch and pulled up ONE record for the title. When I viewed the record there was NO link to ebook, only information about print edition. I signed in and reloaded the search and the record. Still no link to the ebook. There were 50 results for my title search and I scanned all to confirm there was no other record for this title. This seems particularly weird to me. I attach the chat transcript in pdf so you have access to all the links shared during this transaction. I have also attached screenshots of the two records in NUSearch, one with the other without the ebook link. While I know it sometimes takes time for location info to load in NUSearch, the system had completed processing the request. Or maybe it stopped processing too soon? I would like to follow up with this patron, who I advised to get the print edition in the meanwhile. This is one of those situations where NUSearch and Primo confound me. Replicable actions turning out non-identical really bug me!! | Alice Tippit | Checked online access and I did not see access to full text, only abstracts and an offer to buy an ebook - and I am signed in to VPN. A search in NUsearch yielded a record for the online version that links to the physical copy, and a separate record for the physical copy that does not link back to the online version. Judging by the second permalink from Anne in the chat, her search was limited to the library catalog - set to "Books, Images, and More" which yielded only the result for the physical copy not cross-linked to the online version. Will contact Tim Hagan about the access issue - not sure about the other piece. | 02/09/22 12:06 PM | ||||||

| Basia Kapolka | basia.kapolka@northwestern.edu | Access Services | Patron found this article in the catalog which is linked only to the physical holding and not to the online version of the journal. This led the patron to request a physical copy and receive a hard copy of the journal from pre-1994. I'm not sure what the catalog solution is. The article wasn't available through our subscription either (it's from 2022), but was available free through the Elsevier Covid-19 resource center. | Becca Greenstein | rgreenst@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | I was at the IC desk yesterday and a patron wanted to look for books in Russian (any level, any content). I ended up searching for the word "book," and then narrowing by language, and format, and location (there were a good number in the Curriculum Collection), because you can't do a search with no keywords. I received the following message: Not sure if this is the correct place to report this, but there are at least a couple of problems with the Folders section of the website. When I try to rename a saved search or change its search terms, I get this error: "WorkFolders service is temporarily unavailable." Without this feature, if I need to make any edits to a saved search, I have to rebuild the search from scratch (takes forever). I reviewed the site and it is possible to rerun a search, make changes to the terms, and save it as a new search, at least in Firefox and Chrome (our notes indicate you were using Safari, which I am unable to test at the moment). There isn’t an option to rename or edit a previously saved search, but I think you might be referring to the option to edit and save as a new search? Please let me know if Firefox or Chrome work for you. I will try to replicate the error in Safari and report it to our vendor if there is still an issue. | 02/21/23 8:30 AM | ||||||

| Becca Greenstein | rgreenst@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | I bought a book for the Math Library called Elements of ∞-Category Theory. The cover of the book (visible when you click on the Cambridge Ebooks Local hyperlink) has the infinity symbol but I'm guessing Primo is having a hard time interpreting this. | Michelle Guittar | michelle.guittar@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | Hi everyone, I'm having a difficult time keeping up with the changes to the way WorldCat holdings are displayed through Primo. I like the "search other libraries" function that was recently added to Primo. I recall that Primo used to link to the public interface of WorldCat where there was an "NUL ILL" button function. Then it was changed to the "Northwestern Libraries" branded interface. I was just getting used to it, but now it's back to a public Worldcat interface. I only see buttons that prompt users to borrow from specific institutions (rather than sending the request directly to ILL). Can you please advise me on what/when/why all the changes? Is there a specific interface we are working towards? I'm just trying to tell a student how to request a book we don't have through ILL. Michelle | Frank Sweis | I think this might be an issue with the link in the "No Records Found" page. I shared that with Alice and will follow up with Michelle to confirm that's how she accessed WorldCat. | 04/17/23 2:23 PM | ||||||

| Becca Greenstein | rgreenst@northwestern.edu | Instruction & Curriculum Support | I heard from a professor that he is seeing duplicate results when he's tried various NUsearch searches recently. One of his searches was for munagi complementing, which I searched for as well. In Firefox, I got two results, neither of which was a duplicate. In Chrome, I had the same problem with duplicate results (screenshots attached for both searches). For both searches, it says 1-2 of 2 results, but in the Chrome search, there are more results on the page. | Anne Sticksel | amsticksel@northwestern.edu | Academic Engagement | Hello, I wanted to share this example I encountered yesterday, the patron was confused about where to click: https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/p285fv/cdi_openaire_primary_doi_751dcf150e6daaf2177a6aabbf636cf8 I guess they could click anywhere since they all go to basically the same place, but it’s visually cluttered and confusing to someone, especially who is not used to searching our catalog. Is there any way to streamline the look of these links? I also encountered this via library@ email, https://search.library.northwestern.edu/permalink/01NWU_INST/p285fv/cdi_crossref_primary_10_1080_15422119_2022_2039196 The Unpaywall link auto-downloads a word doc of a “revised version” of the article and only includes the abstract and introduction. It says we have online access but we don’t yet (most recent 1 year not available). Since unpaywall is the only link it’s misleading that we have online access | Geoff Morse | Unfortunately we cannot change the Unpaywall link aside from turning it off which we do not want to do as most of the links work well, This particular link is working as it should, it is just that the open access version of the document is not a complete version of the article. The unpaywall links, on the whole, will take the user to more complete versions of the article so it is important we leave the link active. Regarding the interface, there are now more brief records with direct links to the article but there has not been a change to the overall number of possible links. We will discuss at a future Primo Team meeting. | 02/23/24 11:11 AM |
